Book Reader (Part 5 Final)

.

.

.

All of the songs that Woohyun had picked out were good. There were diverse genres but they had the same feel. Smooth, sincere and lovely songs. Even the songs that he liked were like him and I listened to them again and again. As I was listening, I thought back to the memories I had with him. From the first time I met him to the last, these memories were hard to erase from my mind. The fact that it was possible for people to long for something this much was weird. And that longing hurt too much.

.

Even today, I was holding the tapes that Woohyun gave me in my hand and was sitting still. And in these tapes there was the song that Woohyun had hummed to, and thinking of those hums, Sunggyu liked listening to that song… because it was as if he were hearing Woohyun actually humming it to him.

.

Right then, the old red phone in the corner of the room began ringing loudly. Sunggyu dragged his butt and picked up the phone.

.

.

” Hello? ”

– Uh, Sunggyu-yah.

” Noona? ”

– Eung. You’re going to work in a little while, right? I’m sorry noona can’t come over often. I’m busy because of the baby.

” No it’s okay. I’m thankful for you even giving me a call. ”

.

.

From the other line, a baby’s cry could be heard and his noona consoling the baby came through the phone. While holding the phone, Sunggyu’s head was fixed to the direction of the cassette player that was singing its song.

.

.

– Sunggyu, what do you do these days?

.

.

Me? I am slowly…..

.

.

– Sunggyu-yah?

.

.

Right then, the song that was entering Sunggyu’s ears began stretching out. With surprised eyes, Sunggyu moved his body following the sound of the song and tapped on the cassette player. Through the long stretched out cord of the phone, the worried voice of Sunggyu’s sister flowed out, but Sunggyu held the phone in between his shoulder and cheek and desperately hit the cassette player.

.

It can’t do this, please! It can’t do this. And he pressed the button to take out the tape. Sunggyu’s fingers could feel the long stretched out plastic tape in his hands.

Suddenly, Sunggyu’s heart began to shake. One hand held the phone again. But that hand was shaking uncontrollably. And from his eyes, tears began welling up.

.

.

” Noona…… ”

– Sunggyu-yah, is something wrong?

” The tape is stretched out………. ”

.

.

– Sunggyu-yah.

” Noona. ”

– ……….

” …… the tape is stretched out. ”

.

.

From the other line, his noona did not answer. Only a distant cry of his nephew was heard. Sunggyu fumbled with the tape in his hands. And to the top of that hand, a tear fell down. Tears that wet his cheeks. He felt something hot come up to the end of his throat.

.

.

Hearing the sobbing, scream-like cries, his noona didn’t know what to say. Even as Sunggyu knew he should be like this, he couldn’t hold back the seeping cries. His lips just kept repeating that the tape had stretched out.

.

.

” It’s stretched out. It can’t be stretched out…… ”

.

If one thing of memory disappearing makes my heart hurt so much like this, then how deep and fragile were my feelings that bloomed towards him….

.

.

– Sunggyu-yah, should noona go there right now?

” Noona. ”

– Eung?

.

.

Sunggyu continued his words with a sobbing voice has he kept touching the tape.

.

.

” …. What do I have to do to forget about that person? ”

.

.

Like the tape that gets stretched out if listened for too long, Sunggyu’s heart that kept thinking about him had stretched out long enough. On top of those stretched out feelings, tears drip drip fell down. He resented his own heart for not listening to the brakes. That person’s scent made it hard to forget no matter how many times he tried, and made Sunggyu not able to breath.

.

Sunggyu’s held back cries suddenly burst out like a waterfall. Without words, his noona consoled Sunggyu of those pouring tears from over the phone.

A time that was just a task for him was a time that was everything for me, and I had to realize the gap in the weight of time.

.

.

I am slowly….. No, I don’t think I can ever forget about him.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

” Woohyun-ah, where are you going. ”

” ………. ”

.

.

Woohyun had gone back to being like he was before meeting Sunggyu. Woohyun came out of his room without a word, and she watched him with worried eyes. She figured that Woohyun had found out about her meeting with Sunggyu, but she didn’t have the courage to stop Woohyun and therefore, she could only just worry about him like this.

.

Woohyun stopped his feet and looked at his mom. Resentful eyes. After that day, Woohyun had always looked at her with these eyes. And every time his mom met those eyes, she felt her heart breaking apart.

.

Woohyun let out a sigh. And at that sigh, his mom asked with a slightly sad voice.

.

” Are you being like this to mom because of Sunggyu-goon? ”

” ………. ”

.

.

He thought that it was slowly getting erased by alcohol, but because of the face that was drawn just by his mom’s one word, Woohyun’s heart shook like it was going to burst. The star that had no one to look at was slowly loosing its light.

.

And his mom, watching Woohyun becoming ruined day by day, also became ruined. It was like love had the power of ruining a person along with ruining the people related to him.

.

.

A suffocating silence filled the room. Woohyun couldn’t just stand around any longer so he went to the front door and put on his shoes. Watching Woohyun put them on, his mom urgently yelled.

.

” Is mom nothing to you now? ”

.

Flinch, Woohyun’s hands as he was putting on the shoes suddenly paused, then he finished putting on the shoes as if nothing had happened and open the door to put half of his body out the door. Seeing that, his mom dropped her head. Right then, Woohyun’s voice was heard.

.

” No. I’m not being like this because of you, mom. ”

.

His mom showed surprised eyes and looked to Woohyun again. But Woohyun was still not looking back at her. His mom’s eyes were only directed at Woohyun’s back.

.

” My life without that person is nothing. ”

.

Boom. With that, his mom began pouring out her tears. Her heart that was loving and caring for Woohyun just turned to worry and pain, and it let the tears out. His mom poured out her tears until she felt there were no more tears to pour out.

.

.

.

.

Woohyun found himself naturally heading to Sunggyu’s house and let out a sigh before stopping his feet. Even after thinking that he should stop secretly watching him, his body was finding him first rather than his head. He hit his own innocent head a couple of times.

.

Woohyun went into a street-store that his eyes found. Please give me any good side-food here with a bottle of soju. At the words he said as he sat down, a kindhearted aunt said, Nae, student!, and answered.

.

All eyes came down on the young student who came in the dark of night by himself to drink alcohol. But Woohyun didn’t know of those eyes. All thoughts were about Sunggyu and he couldn’t take it anymore.

.

The ordered foods came out and Woohyun quickly poured a glass to himself. Gulp, gulp. He was on the weak side of alcohol but the only thing that would allow him to pull through these feelings was alcohol.

.

.

” Student, eat slowly will you? You’ll get sick. ”

.

.

The ahjumma’s eyes looked pitifully at Woohyun. Woohyun simply nodded to the ahjummah and gulped down another glass.

.

The bitter alcohol going down the throat was too clearly felt. If I can make the longing go down along with this alcohol, then I wouldn’t have to be this upset. Woohyun’s face began to grow a bit rosy.

.

.

Drip drip, above the plastic roof that the street-store was covered in, small drops of rain began coming down before the drops turned into complete floods. Woohyun thought that maybe since he himself wasn’t crying, the heavens were crying for him.

.

.

One glass.

Another glass.

.

.

With him unstoppably gulping down the glass of drinks, the ahjummah watched with worry. But Woohyun’s hand showed no signs of stopping. The side-foods that were not touched at all were quickly getting cold.

.

.

.

The only thing getting damp in the flood of rain was not just Woohyun’s heart. Closing the open window, Sunggyu slid down the wall and fell down. In place of the tapes that Woohyun gave me, I listened to the rain. If I thought to myself that maybe Woohyun would be listening to this rain too, it comforted my mind. I just wanted to hear the invigorating yet suffocating sounds of rain. For hours and hours, I stayed blankly listening to the rain. This state of nothing coming to my head and not wanting to do anything continued.

.

Sunggyu hugged his knees. The person that pops up in my mind in these situations: Nam Woohyun, it was only this person and it was upsetting.

.

When being pained by Woohyun’s longing, suddenly Sunggyu’s ears became noisy.
Boom boom boom. At the noise that seemed like it was going to break open the door any minute now, Sunggyu became frightened and scooted his body to the corner of the room.

But those rough hands had no thought of stopping. Boom boom boom. He tried his best to ignore it but it was hard to do so. Hearing the endless noise, Sunggyu worked up the courage and went near to the front of the door.

.

.

” Who is it? ”

.

.

The trembling voice received no answer back. The sound of, Boom boom boom, returned instead of an answer, so Sunggyu gulped dryly and started to slowly open the door.

When he slightly opened it, the door widely flung open and something collapsed into Sunggyu’s arms. Sunggyu stumbled because of that weight and fell back into the kitchen. Having fallen on his butt, his back hurt and he frowned as he rubbed his back.

And only then did he start getting back to his senses. Even if there were no words, even if there were no sounds… Sunggyu knew it was him right away. He couldn’t believe that it was Woohyun who had fallen into his arms while being drenched in rain. With trembling hands, he touched Woohyun’s cold cheek.

.

” Woohyun-ah, are you okay? ”

.

Embarrassingly, Sunggyu’s trembling voice was as trembling as his hands. Woohyun seemed to feel the chills by being soaked in the rain and shuddered, then hugged Sunggyu tightly.

Hearing Sunggyu’s heartbeats, it felt like all the time spent being lost in the past was calming down and his mind seemed to have found peace. Woohyun felt resentful but also missed feeling this kind of emotion by this person.

.

Sunggyu’s mind as he looked down at Woohyun who was leaning on him while he hugged, was also clustered the same. Am I allowed to be hugged by this person? Am I allowed to feel relieved like this? I never felt this resentful to my eyes that couldn’t see. Because of Woohyun’s cold body warmth, I was worried about Woohyun’s state. With Woohyun not even answering, I was worried and going crazy that he may have hurt himself badly. I shook Woohyun one more time and spoke to him. Woohyun-ah, are you okay?

.

.

Please. God. This moment, just for a few seconds, allow me to see what’s in front of me. Please, just this once, allow me to see Woohyun.

.

.

Even at Sunggyu’s desperate questions, Woohyun did not answer and scanned Sunggyu with hazy eyes, then softly wrapped his hands around Sunggyu’s cheeks.

.

And even before Sunggyu could do anything, he felt their lips meet. Sunggyu tried to pull back but when he felt Woohyun’s breaths right in front of his nose, his mind became hazy and just closed his eyes.

.

A light peck started to turn into a deep kiss. Sunggyu received Woohyun being like this without a word. Woohyun let out heavy breaths and kissed like he was eating Sunggyu’s lips. Sunggyu’s first kiss smelled of alcohol mixed with sadness and rain washing away the longing.

.

.

” Why are you staying still? ”

.

.

When Woohyun was done kissing, he looked at Sunggyu’s face and strongly hit down on the floor. I got mad. I’m hurting so much like this, but you can just live on?

.

Sunggyu’s body trembled weakly.

.

” Woohyun-ah. ”

” We’re just a good hyung and dongsaeng, so is that why you’re letting me do this? ”

.

Sunggyu’s eyes shook. Hearing the words that had come out of his own mouth once, it made him not know how to respond, so he stayed still. Watching Sunggyu be like this, Woohyun was about to go crazy. You said we were hyung and dongsaeng so why………

.

He hated himself for getting happy for just being beside Sunggyu. Woohyun’s tears flowed out like rain. Like the last day, like the first day he had hugged Sunggyu, Woohyun poured out his tears.

.

” If we broke up to become happy, then we should be happy. ”

.

.

The world says we can’t be together like it’s an obvious thing.

.

.

” But hyung. ”

.

When Woohyun’s sight was full of Sunggyu who was trying his best to see, to feel him, Woohyun remembered the first day that he had a heart for Sunggyu. Woohyun’s heart beat like crazy. My heart is right here….. It’s created in here. If hyung’s not here, then my heart changes like it disappeared… what am I supposed to do with myself.

.

.

” ……. I don’t become happy no matter how long I wait. ”

.

.

It felt like the world we lived in was different than other people’s worlds.

.

.

Sadness and happiness mixed to arouse a drunk feeling. Woohyun tried to grasp onto his hazy mentality but couldn’t do so and dropped into Sunggyu’s arms. But only Woohyun’s body couldn’t take the drunkenness, and he remained sobbing still.

.

Sunggyu patted Woohyun’s cold body without a word. Although it was the sounds of sobbing, it was better to listen to this than the tape he had listened to so much that it stretched out. He felt disgusted in himself feeling happiness in the sounds which made him realize that Woohyun was beside him. He’s crying so am I allowed to feel happy like this? Guilt flooded over.

.

After patting him for a long time, Sunggyu worried about Woohyun’s cold body so he tried his best not to move Woohyun’s laid body and reach out to grab the end of the bedcovers and pull it up. Then on top of Woohyun’s body, which was half covering the kitchen and half covering the front door, Sunggyu placed the bedcover on him.

.

The rain was pouring down but the door was wide open. Feeling like this rain had made them meet again, Sunggyu did not try to close the door.

.

I wanted to hear the sound of rain loudly today. I heard Woohyun’s quiet breaths. Sunggyu pulled up his own ends of his clothes to wipe Woohyun’s cheeks for him. And he touched Woohyun’s hair and face that were wet all through the night. And he remembered them deep inside his heart.

.

I don’t think I can take it anymore. Sunggyu turned his head to the sound of rain outside. The rain, pouring as if there was a hole in the sky, seemed to be clearly seen in Sunggyu’s eyes.

.

.

.

.

The morning came. The rain that poured down yesterday had stopped like a lie and bright light was coming through the door. Woohyun rubbed his eyes. Then he raised his body and looked around, only to be surprised and have startled eyes. Knowing that the person laying beside him and being in this place was the very thing he had longed for, made his body harden.

.

Yesterday I drank and……… Woohyun looked at Sunggyu and remembered back to yesterday’s happenings. And the thought of coming to Sunggyu’s house popped into his head and he also barely remembered the words that he had poured out to Sunggyu and…. the touching lips.

.

Ah, I shouldn’t have been like this, Woohyun thought, and when he also thought of it as a relief, he hated himself for thinking so. Woohyun looked at Sunggyu who fell asleep after patting him all night. Without Sunggyu knowing, Woohyun softly touched his cheek. At the reality in front of his eyes, Woohyun shivered. It’s Sunggyu.

.

It’s Sunggyu hyung. It’s really……. Sunggyu hyung….. Woohyun quickly wiped off his embarrassing tears. And he looked to the outside of the door. Sunlight was coming in, and the smell of food was arousing beneath that sunlight along with the sound of children roaming around in the alleys.

.

So I have to go back to reality. Woohyun was about to carefully get up from his seat.

.

.

……!!

.

A pale hand grabbed the end of Woohyun’s shirt. When Woohyun looked down to his side, Sunggyu was blinking with tears in his eyes. My heart stung. Woohyun looked down at Sunggyu without saying anything.

.

.

” …… Don’t go. ”

.

.

Courageous words. At Sunggyu’s words that stopped Woohyun for the first time, Woohyun’s heart beat like it was going to explode. Sunggyu wiped his tears and sat up, then patted his way to find Woohyun’s face.

Woohyun still stared at Sunggyu being like that. Feeling Woohyun’s cheek with the ends of his fingers, Sunggyu moved his eyes around. The first day they met, just like how Woohyun secretly leveled eyes with Sunggyu, Sunggyu was trying to meet eyes with Woohyun right now.

Seeing Sunggyu like this, it was pitiful but so lovely that Woohyun was about to go crazy. Literally, I am crazy about this person. Woohyun bit his lower lip hard.

.

.

” Don’t go. Please. ”

.

.

Sunggyu desperately tried to meet Woohyun’s eyes as he spoke. Woohyun grabbed Sunggyu’s hands that were wrapped around his own cheek and, Kiss kiss, put his lips on each one. At that sound, Sunggyu’s welled up tears dropped down his cheek. The act of kissing the back of each hand felt like an act of goodbye, so it upset him.

.

.

” Hyung. We’re n– ”

” Now I’ll read you a book. Don’t go. Or at least listen to this before you go. Woohyun-ah. ”

.

Sunggyu spoke cutting off Woohyun’s words. Woohyun opened his eyes a little bigger. Sunggyu busily felt around his surroundings and grabbed any kind of paper that came into his hand. Woohyun watched Sunggyu being like this with sad eyes. Sunggyu fixed his blind eyes on a piece of paper and said:

” S-so… Mm… ”

.

Sunggyu stuttered trying to remember an old story that his noona had told him when he was young. Prince and the Pauper.

.

Woohyun’s eyes went to the paper. It was just a simple commercial flyer. Watching him looking down at the paper and creating a story, it made Woohyun’s mind complicated.
I can never figure out hyung’s mind. This person who makes me forget what I should do, who makes my mind as blank as a white piece of paper.

.

Sunggyu spoke about the story for quite a while. Then later, he came to a loss of words because of the man sitting in front of him.

.

.

” So that person, that person…… said this. ”

.

.

Sunggyu desperately held back his cries. He neared the hand that gripped the piece of paper to his mouth to swallow the sobs. Woohyun caressed Sunggyu’s cheek for being like that.

At the sudden touch felt on his cheek, Sunggyu’s teary eyes became big. And in all the while, the tears kept flowing down his cheeks. Finally, Sunggyu burst into sobs. He gripped hard at the piece of paper. The flyer seemed like it was going to rip apart. Sunggyu was barely able to continue his words.

.

” I love you. ”

.

.

The world stops.

.

.

” I really truly love you. ”

” ……… ”

.

.

The eyes that were fixed on the flyer rose up to Woohyun’s shoulders. Woohyun naturally leveled eyes with Sunggyu. Sunggyu started to cry as if someone had just died.

.

You’re the one that taught me these emotions. Please look at me. Don’t leave me alone anymore. He brought out the words he had thought of all the time as he was away from Woohyun.

.

Woohyun’s eyes looking at him suddenly shook. This person is too lovely. Pretty. Seeing him pouring out his heart to me, I wanted to keep him by my side. An innocent greed came in Woohyun’s heart. He pulled Sunggyu in, who was crying like he was about to run out of breath any minute now, and hugged him.

.

.

” I love you. ”

.

.

The moment their matching hearts were confirmed by Woohyun’s voice… This heart undoubtedly pulled these two to one place. Without being able to say who did what first, Sunggyu and Woohyun pulled each other in tightly. The two that were in each other’s arms wished that they would be together forever.

.

.

” Let’s become happy. ”

.

.

In the normal time, they were making the most special time of their lives.

A time that they would never be able to forget and would glow brightly forever.

A time that they would never exchange for their times in the past or in the future.

A time that became the star, the Earth, the lighthouse, the boat defeating the waves.

Great revolution of time.

.

.

Behind the two that were sitting face-to-face near the door, a bright sun began to rise. And that light poured out to the front door. The silhouettes that the light shined on were gentle and lovely.

The light pouring out stronger and stronger made the two people’s body disappear into the sun. And the world changed radiantly.

  10. it was a beautiful story. I was crying, thanks for translating this. I think the book woohyun read is about India not Indonesia. Delhi and varanasi, the places that mentioned in that book is in India. Koreans calls India as Indo, so it may be a mistake. I’m an Indian inspirit.
